AllhiheyAll (1984-2005-2026)

Drawing is a constant correction of errors, maybe a great deal of creation is actually that. There is not really a point you’re suddenly aware that there is nothing more to correct, and if you were aware of that it would probably be very bad. John Berger

With AllhiheyAll (1984-2005-2026), Various Artists aim to harvest the automatisms of others as a means of creating works of art while walking, playing, communicating and/or living, mapping the kinetic energy and unconscious behaviour of the participants.

AllhiheyAll is a conceptual drawing method initiated by Various Artists and executed by 'others'. The project wants to make use of an unconscious energy of an audience. In different ways people carry, bike or drive around with envelopes, boxes, canisters, devices and applications that contain a variety of drawing mechanisms/concepts. Each mechanism/concept has its own time schedule, so that after a certain period of time (this varies from 1 hour to 1 year, depending on the specific need of the drawing) the device/application can be recalled. After the recovery, the application is disassembled and the artwork - once revealed - is catalogued and signed. Finally, the piece of art is returned to the person who executed it.

Allhiheyall plays with the relationship between the artists and the audience, or the carrier (f/x/m), which seems to be mainly technical/executive in nature, but it can be assumed that the collaboration is playful and that the contract between the artist and the producer of the artwork is one of mutual respect and aims to revive the sense of excitement for conceptual abstract art.

The actions and behaviour of the bearers are essential and form, as it were, the main element in the creation of the works of art.

Allhiheyall is an immersive work of art that consists of three parts.

The piece is conceived as an ongoing programme that adapts to time, location and audience. The programme began in 2019 with the first chapter "1984". They organised a show, lectures, publications and a participation in an art fair to connect the project to a necessary audience. "1984" is still ongoing on the one hand through the Allhiheyall Free Art Store, and on the other hand through personal contacts and commissions.

Various Artists now wants to initiate the next two chapters: "2005" and "2026".

Each chapter proposes another way of interaction, dealing with different technical possibilities. In times when all kinds of data are collected without our consent, the project touches on the boundaries between authorship, ownership, privacy and the common good. Technological innovations of the kind that social media companies use to track their users and their focus on the whereabouts of online individuals threaten democracies worldwide. Through the use of initially commercially intended algorithms, entire populations are pitted against each other. It could be fascinating to use the same technology that increasingly divides us for the creation of works of art.

1984

For Chapter “1984”, Various Artists asked their audience to wear a hermetically sealed device for a certain period of time during various occasions. In some cases, the wearer had no exact knowledge of the contents of the package, so she/he/they had to rely on the artists. The instruments were envelopes, boxes or tubes containing various mechanical drawing mechanisms that all could have been manufactured before 1984, the year the personal computer was introduced.

Chapter “2005” follows in the footsteps of Chapter “1984” by presenting to the participating public a variety of portable devices equipped with technology (Arduino, hardware hacking, robotics, micro printers ...) of the last 30 years. This technology allows them to develop devices that show interesting results within a few hours, even minutes, while remaining true to the general concept of tracking the movement of the carrier. Moreover, this idea can be extended to the space that surrounds the participants in order to make installations/creations/devices? that are not limited to physical drawings but can include sound, video, text, and so on.

2026

The final Chapter 2026 provides us with more questions than answers (theoretical, philosophical and political). Various Artists propose to question and research what social media companies do with the data they collect from our online behaviour and actual whereabouts. How to build concepts, prototypes and even applications that visualise this harvesting and tracking? Could they with the help of specialists write applications and algorithms that after a period of time turns our online and offline behaviour into art?

THE PROGRAMME (ongoing)

The first chapter is particularly suitable for showing children and young people through public play sessions that art can make itself, that there is a difference between the idea and the product. Chapter "2005" is suitable for organising workshop-like events for an interested public, focusing on demonstrations of installations and the production of prototypes. Public events in the last chapter would revolve around lectures and demonstrations of a technology that has major implications in our lives, socially and politically, through working and thinking sessions that address the topic and present creative/constructive ideas.
